I’ve disabled the SmartWare in this drive to use a more user-friendly backup software.  Is there a way I can have this external hard drive sleep when not in use?

Yes you can, but you need Smartware as it is the one who controls the sleep timer feature under settings.

Yes, you need SmartWare to change the timer settings, but then you can either disable it or uninstall it and the drive should retain the settings.
