My Book Essential 1140 - files disappear after file transfer and .avi files not recognised

Hi there, A friend of mine needed help how to copy a DVD he bought to his hard drive (Western Digital My Book Essential 1140) We converted the DVD to both .avi and .mpeg file formats. With the files on the PC we can watch the movies no problem. With the files copied across to the external hard-drive but still connected to the PC we can watch the movies no problem. The issue lies when we connect the hard-drive to the Samsung television to watch them on the big screen. The files disappear completely and cannot be found in the file structure. When the hard-drive gets reconnected to the PC the files have disappeared from there as well. Why does this happen? Is there a solution? The other issue is a number of other files on his hard drive, mainly TV shows and movies in either .avi or .mp4 pop up with error messages saying file format not recognised, when other .avi and .mp4 files work fine. I hope I have provided enough information, if not, please ask what other information you need and I’ll find it out for you, it may take time as the hard drive is not at my house.

Try posting in the TV section you’ll probably get more help there. The drive may need to be formatted FAT32 to work on the TV.

I don’t think the TV causes the files to disappear though. That is the bigger concernt hat files get copied accross, then whent he drive gets disconnected from pc, and plugged in again, the files have gone.
