MY BOOK ELITE 1TB - not responding

I have a MY BOOK ELITE 1TB - PAN-AM that I bought from Costco, well, I’m not sure when, but the warranty expired 11-Dec-2013, so it’s at least 7 years old…probably closer to 8.

I don’t remember the last time that I used the drive, so I’m not sure when the problem started. The basic issue is that when the unit is plugged into power and connected to my computer via the usb cable the computer doesn’t seem to recognize it - nothing shows up in windows explorer, etc.

The power light in front is on. My initials show in the led screen (that must be what I named the drive). I recall there used to be an indicator of how full the drive was on that led screen. If so, that’s blank.

What sort of troubleshooting is there to do? What are my options? Do you suppose the usb cable is bad? Do I have a very expensive brick with a lot of data in it?

Thanks, in advance, for your assistance,
wollernwd

There can be various reasons for an HDD to become unresponsive. Reconnecting the HDD won’t help in most cases. The HDD remains visible and may be detected by the system if you connect it to another PC, but it doesn’t respond.

Below are few possible reasons for HDD being unresponsive:

  • A Lot of bad sectors
  • Infected File (Virus or Malware)
  • Driver issue
  • Mechanical failure

You can try the below options to resolve the issue:

  • Run CHKDSK
  • Use an Antivirus & Anti-Malware tool
  • Re-install the drivers

Further, I suggest you check out the below blog to know the possible solutions for this issue: https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to-fix-not-responding-hard-drive/
