hi everyone,need help badly…just bought my 2 tb essential for my laptop,throwed in 462 gb of personal data and then updated the EssentialElite_FirmwareUpdater_v2.010(1.0.8.3) that the smartware software recomend me to…once the update began after 4 minutes(slow update it was) I got an error message with a number I cant remember now,and my computer by it self restarted…after all this- if everything went well -i was suposed to upgrade the software …But instead of this ,everything went wrong and my 3day old HD was no longer traceable from my laptop and two indicators led up, one dot-shaped led ,and one locket-shaped led(like it has been locked up) …there is a feature in the software to protect with password the HD ,but I had never activated this option
Is there a way to bring it back to normal?make it work I mean…and if not how will I recover my 462gb data?

already tried to power cycle the external hard drive
already tried to recover my system with succes the updates were gone but the HD still seems to be locked…
already went to the shop for support and they can only replace my HD with a new one ,but my data wiil be lost for ever…
already try to conect to another computer with no results…only noticed that the locked-up indication leds turns on
when the power cable goes on ,with or without the usb cable…that tellsme that if that indicator doesn`t go out somehow the hd will remain invisible and useless to my computer…
I just got response from wd support team…as it seems the problem is from an unsuccesfull update of the firmware which made my drive locked and useless…462gb of photos videos and some movies all were erased because of some useless update material…if Iknew the risks from the begining …tomorrow Ill go at the shop and replace the drive with a new one,but its gonna be my last wd product THAT`S FOR SURE!
It happened to me as well now!!! What should I do? I have completly the same problem, after the update where was the error, my computer restarted and the HD is no longer traceable!!
What should I do? How can i rescue my data? How to repair it? Send me some info pls.
sorry I haven`t found a solution yet…the most posible thing for me to do is forget the lost data and replace the disk with a new one(warranty) …and never buy wd products again…hope u find something that will work…
Actually , Since the Wd Smartware has a Hardware based encryption if the Drive is locked the only way to use
it once more is to erase it , which by the way erases all Data …
However i heard From another person that using a Password Bruter forcer that could help you to crack the password is something possible , so thats another thing that could be try…
Soif i want to use your disk, then I should have another one from a better comapany and first of all copy all 1,5TB to the other disk then upgrade and copy back???
Anyway the problem is, that the computer doesnt regonize the disk anymore… what should i do? How can I format it?
It is imposible to format an invisible disk…check your warranty -usually lasts 2 years begining the day you bought the drive…-.if it is not expired u can still replace the disk…no extra costs(excluding the ethical damage)

well in this case common sense says that WD team should have taken its responsibiilities and percautions…they could easilly add one simple notice " the update risks all your data to be lost" when WD costumers run the update and let them to press ok…inform before running…not big of a deal for WD I think…

Well you can write here anything you want… The thing is, that it is a ■■■■ and that I will tell all my friends.
So I don’t mind what you write us here… But it is UNRELIABLE and like this I will present it to all people I know…
And know you have to think what is better/cheaper for you… Make it reliable or have a really bad reputation between students on an IT University (30 000 potential customers)…
