My Book 2TB drive is full, but source drive is only 1/4 full

I have a My Book 2TB external drive, backing up automatically (via WD SmartWare Pro) the 2TB C: drive of my Win 7 PC. I recently discovered that the automatic backup had stopped because the My Book 2TB drive is full. But the 2TB C: drive is only 1/4 full (500 GB used, 1.5 TB remaining).

How did that happen? What should I do about it? I’m thinking I should delete everything on the My Book drive and start the WD SmartWare Pro backup all over again.

What do you think?

I found that my email program Thunderbird was taking up the extra space on the My Book drive, 1.3TB vs 40GB on the C: drive. so I deleted all the Thunderbird folders and files on the My Book drive, and copied them over from the C: drive. Then started the automatic backup again which seems to be working. I still have no idea how that huge amount of extra stuff got into the Thunderbird folders on the My Book drive.
