Imagine a few months from now when the MPW is popular and in more use, you are in a Hotspot with it or on an airplane, you turn yours on and see 3 or 4 other My Passports on the wireless signal! Which one is yours?
There is a way to avoid this – give yours a unique name. Here are some suggestions:
Add your initials to the end of the default name, or add the last three characters of your MPW serial number to the end of the default name. Do this for MPW wireless signal and the device itself.
Thanks, but this is not “my idea” since my Seagate wireless drive came set up with a unique name – the last three characters of the unit’s serial number are tacked onto the default name. WD shudda done this as well. (And, it’s not to late to do so on the next batch before they are boxed up.)
Another thing I have done with my unit is I don’t use the Auto Channel setting, under Advance Settings, for the Wi-Fi. It always seems to select Channel 2 and because of the great overlap of channels with 802.11x, Channel 2 is no solution for traffic on Channel 1.
If you know your envorinment, choose a channel that is not used and not overlapping with another used, if possible.
Best choices are 1, 6, or 11. These channels don’t overlap.
If there is traffic on the 1, 6, and 11, try something inbetween, like 3 or 4, or 8 or 9. There is still some overlap but you should see better performance.
So I will often set my MPW to Channel 3 or 4, or 8 or 9 and it seems to perform better.
