Today I updated MPW (1TB model) with 1.06.06. I was running 1.04.06 and while I don’t use it very often, it’s my backup and the wireless feature makes using it for an iPad (no connection other than wireless really) worthwhile.
I ran into a number of issues.
The first was not being able to access the dashboard/control feature via the USB on my MacBook. The only way to access that appears to be via wireless. Maybe that is mentioned somewhere in a manual.
I tried to use the manual option for the updating. I wish there was a general time estimate for the process to complete. After more than one hour I decided something wasn’t working right.
Also this is probably a Mac-only issue but the default unzipping program failed to leave the .bin file. It just went all the way to a folder and a number files. That did show me that the expanded size was about 100 MB. Quite large I think. That update info would be useful too.
I finally used the StuffIt program I had which left the .bin file. As I mentioned the updating must of got hung up. It started and gave me a window stating it was uploading/updating. But NO progress info.
I’m glad for this message board. After reading through a few threads I learned that the updating stops if the battery is low. I started the process with a green light. I think the battery was about 50%. I suspect that is what happened. Maybe if I had plugged in the device it would have worked.
I found a thread that suggested a SD card option. After an hour of no apparent progress I decided to give that try. I created the folder and placed the .bin file in it. Stuck the SD card in the unit and restarted it. It blinked the white light for awhile and then went to the green and blue lights. It seemed very fast - maybe a minute? I checked the dashboard and the update didn’t show. I’m not sure if I was clicking around things on the dashboard but noticed the white light flashing again. This time it flashed longer - many minutes I recall. Anyway when I check the dashboard the version number showed the update worked.
I think the SD option should be the suggested as the quickest and surest option.
