Micro sdhc card will not format

I have a micro sdhc card, 32gb, I don’t know the class, and while using an sd card adaptor to see if it worked I tried formatting, it read and I could see the files. But when I tried to format it erased but didn’t format, I have heard it is the adaptor, which I think mine is a normal micro sd not an sdhc adaptor, but what I want to know is will it still format if I get a compatible reader
