Kein Wiederherstellen möglich

Hallo zusammen,

in english:
Backup with my WD Passport external drive did work. I can identify and open all the files on the target drive. However, when I click on the ‘restore’ button, the window in which I should select files to be restored remains empty. What could I have done wrong?

Was könnte ich falsch gemacht haben?

Hi

Do you see a small rotating circle in the select files window. That means preparing to display. It can take a long time, especially the first time.

Do you get the file structure in the left window? You need to select folders to display the filenames in the right window, then select the file…

If no circle, then ???

Does that help?

Cliff

H i!

No, there is no circle, although I waited a very long time. And there is
no file structure in the window I posted.

Kind regards, and thanks so far …
Horst

OK,

Try this:

Under Windows Computer Management open the Services listing. Should have at least WD Backup and WD Drive Manager running. If there, but stopped, try manual start. If not there, try downloading:

WD Backup
WD Drive Utilities
WD Security
WD Discovery

and restart Windows.

Cliff

Hi Cliff, thanks again.

I think, the problem is solved. Let me tell you:

When first I wrote to you, I thought the backup (of some 750 GB) to be
finished. I thought this, because the WD backup window was closed by
itself. However, opening the restore window in the WD backup window
menu, nothing happened. Nevertheless, I found files by random on the
backup drive. That was why I thought to experience a software or an
application problem.

I then cleared all backup files on the backup drive, selected very few
files only to be restored (in order to reduce data volume), started WD
backup again, and experienced some minutes later, that WD software
announced that backup had been finished successfully. Opening the
restore window now, I saw the file structure of the restored files, and
was able to select files to be restored.

My suspicion from this experience was, that the first backup had been
interrupted by my custom setting of backup intervals. (I had set it to
‚hourly‘).

Next, I deleted the backuped files on the backup drive again, selected
all my files (about 750 GB) to be backuped, again, set the interval to
once a month, and started the backup anew.

Now it lasted more than 24 hours with very slow backup progress, but,
after this ‘endless’ period of time, all files had been backuped.
Opening the restore window showed the structure of backuped files, as it
should be.

I think, you should tell your clients (in the manual, for example) that
the period of first backup should not interfere with custom setting of
backup intervals; in other words: first backup should be finished before
the next backup (initiated by custom setting) starts.

Kind regards
Horst

Hi Horst,

Glad you have found a solution.

I’m not sure I agree with you about a second backup starting while one was already in process. That would be very poor software design in my opinion. I can’t offer a different reason though, except it just takes a long time to do an initial file structure to match the PC drive structure.

Actually, I’m not WD employee; just a user, like you.

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

I agree, maybe I was not patient enough to wait for the end of initial
structure making in first backup, all the more I had the impression that
this was done already.

However, I experienced a new problem: I cannot restore files, although I
have the structure of all my backuped files in the restore window of the
WD backup menu. The app pretends to restore, tells me, that it was
successful, but I cannot find the restored file. It does not work with
the original place (from where the file came) nor with any other target
folder, selected in the restore window (not on the original disk, nor in
a folder on another disk drive) …

But I do not want to take your time, as you are not an employee of WD.

Where do you live? I am from Germany, as you will know from my business
card.

Kind regards
Horst

Hi Horst,

I decided to try Restore (call it A). It did ONE file of many, then went into loop! File was BOOTNXT, which is a system file and not even in my restore selection! But it did go into the folder I specified.

I can find files in the default restore folder, even though I don’t recall running restore previously. But the backups for my most active files seem quite up to date and readable.

So I tried just 4 files into the special restore folder and that worked. Now when I check for the ones back in the first restore (A) they are fine!

Conclusion: We have to be patient!

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

patiency is not my strong point, I have to admit ;-).

But: I cannot find any files ‘restored’: Not in the default folder, not
in any other selected/specified folder (I have checked all this) …,
and this although WD Backup software tells me: Restoring successful …
How long should I wait, additionally?

My conclusion: patiency is as necessary as good and reliable software :-).

I thank you very much, and appreciate the time you have spent for my
problem.

Kind regards

Horst

Hi Horst,

Don’t know what else to offer. Try going to SUPPORT. They are the official people, but slow to answer.

Oh, and I live in New Hampshire, USA.

Keep smiling,
Cliff

Yep, I’ll do/have done, experiencing slow respond time :-(, nevertheless
keeping

What are you doing there, inNew Hampshire? Is it ‘the Garden State’ near
New York?

Kind regards
Horst

Whoa,

New Hampshire is much more to the North than New York. You are thinking New Jersey.

I’m long retired. Just fool around on computers and things.

Cliff

Heelo Cliff,

yep, I mixed it up with New Jersey.

I am retired, too, fooling around in philosophy now, and feel to be
fooled by my computers some time :-).

Kind regards
Horst
