How to restore from WD My Passport Ultra to a repaired laptop?

In July I bought a new laptop, and a new WD My Passport Ultra. Backed up the data on the laptop a few times to it. Towards the end of August the laptop failed, and went back for repair, came back with a new hard drive, and newly installed Windows 10. All my data on the old hard drive was gone. Luckily I had My Passport.
However I’m baffled how to restore it. If I go to the Restore option in WD Backup, it tells me I don’t have a backup plan. That’s true, but I don’t want to back anything up yet. I want to restore what I had backed up in August.
I tried finding the folders for myself and just copying them across, but then I found that the backups had modified the file types so a jpg becomes a JPG_LAST file (and a Doc becomes a DOC_LAST etc), which isn’t recognised by Windows.

What is the correct procedure?

The following article should be able to assist:

Files from older backups should be displayed when selecting “Select Files to Restore”.

Thanks Trancer. I looked at that article yesterday, unfortunately it doesn’t match what happens when I try to restore.
When I click the Restore option in WD Backup, it tells me “There are no files to restore. You have not scheduled a backup plan”. That’s true, but I don’t really have anything worth backing up yet, and I’m quite nervous about what will happen to my existing backups from August if I start running new backups.
