How to make usable exact copy of internal hard drive

Sorry if I’m in the wrong place.
I’m using Windows 7/64 with Windows Live Mail.
I have a newer computer with Win10 and their Mail system.
My old system will fail at some point, and I really want to keep Win7 and WLM.
Is there any way to copy all the program and data files to an external drive and keep it updated so I can continue to use them after my current HD fails?
I have a MyBook with 3TB, and the box says “protect your system files with the full metal backup of Acronis True Image WD Edition backup sofware. Free download at wd.com/Acronis.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ECKJR,

You should have a look at the link given below.

Thanks, Alex. I’m asking you for more help, since I never got a response other than yours.
I’d read on another posting that claimed you couldn’t boot from a cloned disk, but the instructions on the automatically cloning you gave me inferred that I could. Can I?
If so, then I’d like to sync it with my internal drive, so it’d be kept up to date. However, one of the articles after the “how to automatically clone” article said “Acrons True Image WD Editions requires a WD or Sandisk Internal Drive to Install.” My HP computer isn’t likely to have either of those drives; does that mean I can’t backup to the external drive after it’s cloned from my HP internal drive?
If not, could I boot up (even though my internal drive is gone) using my rescue disk I made when I first got the computer, then have the computer recognize the external drive as though it were a new internal drive?
I apologize for my ignorance on these things, and I’d really appreciate any further help you could give me.
Thanks.
