Acronis True Image

I have downloaded and installed Acronis True Image WD edition. When I try to run the program it fails with the message that at least one WD drive must be installed on my system.

Does this mean that my USB connected MyBook Elite external drive doesn’t count as an installed drive?

Or is the problem that Win 10 detects the USB connected My Book as a CDDrive
CD Drive (F:) WD SmartWare ?

If your unit is detected as “CD Drive WD SmartWare” it means one of two things:

  1. Your hard drive is locked. If you open “CD Drive WD SmartWare” you should find an unlocking application that will request your password to unlock your unit.

  2. Your hard drive has lost its partition and needs to be formatted. This can be done within Windows Disk Management.

You should see two icons (One for the hard drive itself and one for CD Drive WD SmartWare) when the volume is healthy and locked.

If your hard drive is not locked and the partition itself is accessible (Which means you can copy and paste data into your hard drive) then Acronis True Image: WD Edition may not support your unit.

I downloaded Acronis True Image to make a clone of my operating system as part of the WD My Book package. I made the bootable recovery disk but still had numerous problems trying to make a clone to My Book. I asked WD Support for help and was told that Acronis True Image cannot make a clone to an external hard drive - only to an internal drive. It that’s the case I don’t understand why WD would advertise Acronis True Image cloning as part of their software package with their external hard drives? If there is a way to make a clone on the My Book I’d be very grateful if someone could tell me how to do it. Thanks

Acronis is advertised as a cloning software that is a part of the software package because it is a cloning software, irrespective of drive-specific features. System images are cloned volumes, and they can be mounted (And even booted from) under some circumstances.

But I can’t make a clone to the external hard drive with Acronis? Or if I can make a clone to the My Book, how do I do it, since it has failed twice when I’ve tried previously?

You can clone your volume to an external hard drive as a disk image, not as a bootable partition.

Sorry to insist, but does that copy my programmes and settings in the same way that a clone of my operating system does? I’ve backed up my documents but it would be great if I can do the equivalent of cloning my operating system as well.

Yes it does. The image file contains your entire system as a snapshot.

I have downloaded Acronis True Image WD software in an attempt to clone my internal drive, each time I open the program it freezes my computer. I uninstalled the program considering it may not have downloaded or installed correctly. I have done this three times, and each time I have uninstalled it and restarted my PC to ensure nothing was left. It still freezes my Win 7 Pro. Any ideas???

I have attempted to use the software to clone my drive and each time I open the program it locks my pc. I uninstalled and reloaded it 3 times with the same results any ideas???

Trancer is a great source of good info so I would agree with him for most of it. I have a proposition that I might offer you to try is to use a USB connected couple of drives, 1 being a WD using a good USB connector that allows the identity of the WD drive to be put onto the Device Manager as a valid WD drive from the list of verified drives. I have an HGST USB 3.0 connector that shows the WD ID in Device Manager. Once that step is done and True Image is satisfied and operable, then dismount the WD and put in any drive you want and clone from the internal to the drive that where you want the image. Seagate is trying to sell so much recovery business that they are not really supporting people doing things for themselves, their latest version of True Image, Discwizard, does not support cloning of Win 10 to SSDs.

I truly hope that WD will negotiate with Acronis to support an installation with a My Cloud in it. But then, Acronis as well as WD and Seagate, like MS, are all selling cloud space. As for me, I want only my private cloud. I qualify for 400GB of cloud but do not use any. I do have a Seagate 8TB backup in addition to My Cloud. I love the speed of the USB 3.0 on the Seagate so I let the My Cloud just tinker along at its snail pace.

Dennis,

The new version 33 from WD does work but it is a bear, look for my other comments on here about how it works. It is a drawn out process of creating Rescue Media and then letting Win 10 finally give up and ask you if you have bootable media and then it will take that media and clone your system. I know, it sounds like a joke but it is the only solution I have found after a week of playing with it and getting practically invisible support from WD here in SE Asia. They escalated it over here but refused to let me chat with US people. They are nice people and want to learn but they do not read, not even the WD new software instructions that they pointed me to. I do not have time to train them to read but I did give them some encouragement to stop feeding Bovine EXcrement to people and admit they don’t know then seek higher help. Surely WD allows them to contact the US for their assistance.

Good luck,
DL
