How do i password protect my new 1TB external hard drive?

Hi guys

im new to this and need some help.  I had an older external drive which has a password proction via WD Smartware but i recently brought a 1TB version for my wife, but cant seem to password protect it, and im reluctant to put any data or files onto it until i have figured out how to do this.  Am i being dim and missing something really obvious?  How do i password protect this drive, its used on both MAC with OS10.6.8 plus a windows 7 laptop

any ideas would be extremely useful.

Hi Lumberjackmike, can you you share the model number for your external drive? Since not all of them support password protection.
