Glad I did not install smartware

OK now I have read this forum and this sounds worse then Microjoke support …  I bought the drive because of what is looking more like rave reviews from vendors trying to sell the products.    I guess if I can use the drive more like a flash drive I am better off because I do not need all this hassle.  So i basically can just transfer my files via copy paste and it should be all good correct ?    I really do not need and auto back up going on and I depend on my readily available memory for other reasons way to much, then to get stuck playing games with a program that just by reading the first few pages of your forum goes wild in the state of release that it is in.   So I need to know can I just cut and paste in explorer and as well transfer these files back and fourth between to windows 7 pro computers ?

You do not have to install the Smartware. You can use this drive like any other drive copy and paste or drag and drop. It should work between different PCs without problems as long as you’re not mixing Windows and Mac.

Joe

Sorry to say Joe it is not that easy like it should be I thought maybe I missed something though now I realize I did not. One computer will let me write to the disk the other will not. Both computers are running win 7 one is pro the other is home premium. My newest computer the windows 7 pro I can write to the disk the other will not lety me write to the hard drive. I have tried many things … would just not worry about it but I bought the passport so I could copy files from the window home premium and then have them when I needed them on my new work station. But the passport will not let me copy any files from my laptop at all.; I have about 250 gigs of art work , animation files, textures etc. About 3 years of work that I need to back up as of yesterday.  I would not even realize I could write to it but after playing with it tryinfg to get it to work for hours I finally did attach it  to my work station and with that computer it did let me paste a folder on to it … But well that computer has nothing that needs to be backed up or transfered. After going around and around I did install the smartware on the laptop etc … but still after setting up the password protect on iot it etc it allows me to unlock it but not copy and paste files to it ?

Hey Joe,

Actually I just deleted the driver as you told someone else to do in another post  located here

http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Passport-for-PC/Remove-the-write-protection-or-use-another-disk/m-p/182908/highlight/true#M5576

after the computer reboots will reinstall the driver and see if this fixed it which I hope it does. I would like to say thank you in advance for any help you provide.  I have been working with computers for years either buidling and developing websites and as well graphics and I oftenm do not run into issues but when I help people I always appreciate being ackowledged and thanks given … so hopefully this will help OK time to reboot and plug back in. Wish me luck as I really need to back up my work that is on this laptop.

OK I did as you said Joe and still it tells me that disk is write protected. the only other thing I can see here is to reformat the disc not sure what is going on and why it will not let me write to it especially when it is new right out of the box.  I bought it because it had rave reviews and I needed a simple solution as I stated …  I have not backed up anything to it as it has not let me yet …   I recieved this hard drive 4 days ago and still have as of yet been able to get it to work as I bought it for ???   Please if you can think of a reason why I would not be able to write to it let me know …

Joe I figured it out this is what I had to do I change the policy in regedit which somehow was switched found this answer here after looking for 2 days straight as I found that it was not working on another usb drive as well
and this is what I did

run regedit . This starts a little program that allows you to operate within the holiest of sites of windows, the registry. Here all kind of actions and behaviors of the system are set. Go to the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ CurrentControlSet\Control \StorageDevicePolicies This is simply a folder within a folder and so on? The final folder, the one you are looking for is called StorageDevicePolicies, and as the name suggests contains the settings for how the storage devices (USB flash) should behave. Here you right click on: ?WriteProtect? and select ?modify?. Here you set the value that appears to ?0″. Press enter and that?s it. (In other words: Default value: DWORD=0) Possible values are: 0 ? Disabled 1 ? Enabled Set the value to 0 and your back in business.
