External hard Drive not working

I have a 2TB External Hard Drive I bought 5 months ago, so still under warranty, I have the blinking light of doom.
I plugged it into my computer and the fan starts to run and it blinks for about 30 seconds and then the fan just stops but it keeps blinking. The hard drive shows up in my Devices and Printers page but doesn’t show up on my computer. I’ve tried every recovery program but it’s useless because it doesn’t show up in my Computer.I still have warranty but unfortunately Western Digital does not have a recovery program and I have to go to a third party. They said the estimate to recover my 2 TB is $1,000! but I only used up 1 TB of data on it but it’s still the same price. I went into disk management and it comes up as disk 2 - Unknown not initialized.

I have windows 7 too.

Someone suggested it was a power source problem and I should switch the case. Any one else tried this?

Spending $1000 is the last thing I want to do. can anyone help me with this?

Thank you

Opening the case voids the warranty. If it’s a drive that came with Smartware it’s hardware encrypted. Even if you get it recognized in another case the data will be encrypted. Contact WD and ask about a new power supply they’ll probably send one as long as the drive is under warranty.

Dude run a data recovery software. There are plenty of options available online.

If the software can not help then you can consider paying for recovery.

Another tale that ends on the same note : Do not trust your important data to just one drive

first, you don’t put too many [edited]title there

if it is serviced, they might get the hands on it

put a diff name, zip it with password etc

~~

next

I  think even it suppose to work quiety at the background

I think put it an extension cord with button

so when you are not REQUIRING back up , turn the power of the MYBOOK to OFF

too much fan, too heavy usage is no good

we buy mybook because we have not got bluray data burner

but if we still got 1G cd-rom  or 4.4G dvd rom to burn

I think it is better to put some ghost image there  too

i.e. 2 backup

1 in  mybook and 1  in DVD or optical device

2 backup is standard thing when we are being taught in those microsoft or database computer professionals course

how to resolve your problem

I don’t know , beside spending the postage and post it back for warranty

can we buy insurance, so someone from western digital, the technician will come to our houese with a brand new  replacment device

if things are encrypted, will WD people able to COPY it before servicing

if I were you , I will worry the [edited], even pirate dvd won’t get me nervous – I don’t have pirate dvd, I bought all genuine brand new DVD box set – I like   — 3rd rock of the sun  and  big bang theory-- so hilarious (even it is not for HD tv set)

could be one of the heads failing…

has this drive been dropped by chance?

you can try running recovery software, but if it hangs or goes slow dont push.
