I have a 2TB external hard disk(Wd element 2tb with 3.0). It was working properly before 2 days but I don’t know what happened to my hard disk, now it’s not working well. Now it’s providing the speed of 300-800kbps during data transfer(before it was 20-100MBps). After some diagnostic, I found that there are a lot of bad sectors on my hard disk. When I start using this HDD it’s disk usage reaches to direct 100%(Task Manager) and Active time to 100%(Resouce Monitor), I just have 2 ways to solve this issue, please help me considering the best possible way.
way-1. Solution to the slow down issue, so that I can get back my data transfer speed(20-100MBps). way-2. I want to take out my 1.5 TB of data out of my hard disk so that I can request for a new hard disk. The think is that the data transfer speed is so slow that If I will start transferring the data to another hard disk in the normal way, It will take a minimum of 6months*24hour to transfer the data so that I can’t go for this solution. So give me a solution so that I can take my data to another hard disk without losing any data(Means any software which will take all my 1.5Tb hard disk data) within a couple of HOURS or 1Day.
NB: - I don’t have another 2 TB hard disk to take backup but I have 1 Tb + 500Gb HDD so that I can take backup separately.
Bad sectors are an early sign of hard drive degradation which can not be addressed without completely erasing the hard drive and writing zeros in order to confirm of said bad sectors are logical or physical.
Logical bad sectors will be corrected when writing zeros. Physical bad sectors require a replacement.
You’re in a precarious position. If this slow down is due to bad sectors you obviously need to repair the situation to get your data rate up. The bad sectors could be due to a bad disk surface, which is not good, but they could be due to other things like a bad head, a bad head preamp, or a bad printed circuit board.
Can you hear any variation in motor speed, such as a varying high pitch whine? Can you hear any clicking? Have you run WD diagnostics on it. You might need an error number for the RMA.
I don’t want to advise you on anything that might corrupt your data further since this kind of problem can get complex. However, in a situation like this I take a fatalistic view that if the data is lost, it’s lost. Others may want to try to preserve it no matter what.
If it was my drive, I would run chkdsk x: /f to start with where x = the drive letter. There are free apps on the Net that will give a visual indication of the extent of bad sectors like Victoria or MHDD.
Barring that, I would run chkdsk x: /r and leave it till it finishes, which could take days. It can be very slow.
chkdsk x: /r examines bad sectors and redirects the damaged sector(s) to a table and remaps the sector to a different area on the disk. You will lose the data on those sectors but if there are not many of them your disk will speed up when chkdsk finishes.
None of the above solutions worked for me.
chkdsk F: /r took almost 1 day but not get any good response.
not able to take any data backup, because of 100% harddisk-use/Active time.
Anyway, Thank you for your time.
