Drive Works with Mac, But Not PC

I’m using my friend’s My Passport drive (“for Mac” WBBABW0010BSL).  It works fine on her Mac (with a recent OS, I’m not sure exactly which).

On my Windows 7 laptop (Pro/64-bit/SP1 with all updates) it initially showed an error where 2 out of 3 drivers were found automatically.  I easily found the third driver online and installed the 64-bit version.  Everything seemed to complete successfully.  I even restarted the laptop for good measure.

Now, when I plug in the My Passport:

  • my “hardware attatched” alert plays
  • I can find “My Passport 071A” in the Devices & Printers Control panel (it doesn’t indicate any problems)
  • I can find “WD SES Device” under “WD drive management devices” in the Device Manager (it doesn’t indicate any problems)
  • I can find “WD My Passport 071A USB Device” under “Disk Drives” in the Device manager in the Device Manager (it doesn’t indicate any problems)
  • I can find “Disk 1” in the Disk Management tool.  This pops up an error window as soon as I open it saying that h I must initialize the disk before Logical Disk Manger can access it.  It asks me to choose a partition style.
  • I CANNOT find the drive in the My Computer “folder” in Windows Explorer

I assume that the Disk Manager wants to wipe all the data off the drive, so I haven’t done that.  Does this sound like a drive that has been formatted for Macs only?  Is there any way for me to access the files?  Maybe something like Knoppix?

A drive formatted for Mac is not usable on Windows without some software I think MacDrive is a free one. I don’t know much about Macs.

You’re right, after I finished typing this, I searched more into how PCs deal with Mac-formatted drives.  I discovered Catacombae HFSExplorer (also free) which let me browse the drive and I’m now in the process of copying.  Now I only wonder why this feature isn’t built-in to Windows.  At the very least, it ought to be able to tell me if the drive is HFS-formatted vs. just broken.

Thanks for posting back about Catacombe HFS Explorer glad to know it does work. There aren’t many Mac users here.
