Does it support play by folder?

However not able to play by folder is going to force me to invest unknown hours to repackage my 1500+ songs, which is unacceptable. By the time I am finished with the task the player is at the end of its service life, another player will be in its place.

So unfortunately, I am taking back to Radio shack for it’s 14 days full refund. I will be either (a) using my 1gB player for a while.  (b) Look into IPOD Nano/Touch.

You are grossly exaggerating the time needed to properly tag your files. Heck, most of them are probably OK as-is.

But since you went through the process of registering just so that you could post on this forum, thanks for sharing. Enjoy your 1GB player.

Bye.

I agree. Playing by folder is a realy important feature.

This must be of the highest prio.

ID tagging and other work around isnt acceptable. I want to d7l a album and lissen to it with out any extra work effort.

I’m sure you’ve responded to a bazillion people complaining about x y & z thing by now, Tapeworm, but I must agree that even with the best tagging tools out there, it is a lengthy process.

The question really becomes why did we all buy this thing if we wanted play by folder when there’s already definitely other devices that have done so, for quite some time. In my case, I was an ■■■■■ and presumed that by this point (when I could have easily posted a query), the Sansa player had surely evolved to include it - just because it seems like a very obvious feature that every player should have.

This doesn’t explain other peoples’ reasons, tho : )

Either way, yes, firmware gods, please bring on the play by folder. Thank you.

Here’s the thing, Is is actually Devolving, to include folder nav. Tags are the way the industry is going. Older players HAD to do Folder Navingation because the technology was not there to do otherwise. What SanDisk is doing by working to add this option is trying to make its user base happy. I dont think it should be an issue to tag your songs. There are easy programs to use that basically do the work for you.

The last thing I want to do is turn this into another ‘Folders vs. Tags’ tug-o-war.

(I probably oughta just shut-up & go on my merry way, but I can’t help myself) :stuck_out_tongue:

Using antiquated folder navigation with today’s tag-based players is a

Welllll I don’t know as it’s backwards. If people want features, they ask for 'em, and if enough people want 'em, hopefully manufacturers give it to them.

The thing about tagging is, unlike stuff that is ordinarily done by your average filesystem - date stamp, filetype, alphanumeric ordering - tagging still requires extra manual input as I mentioned earlier, no matter what tools you use to expedite the job.

If my mp3 ripper instantly knew what kind of tune I had, and the tagging was somehow automagically done from the get go, then sure, why not more file identifier-ing? But Hal isn’t around yet to do that for me,so until then, I would just like to be able to label all my files once, with the filename, and have them be simply sorted alphanumerically. I don’t think this is a lot to ask, compared to a lot of other features. To me, tag recognition should be a bonus, not the ‘must use’ portion of the file system.

Thas all I got. ; )

I dunno…MediaMonkey, Windows Media PLayer 11, and lately FreeRip have gotten almost all of my tags right to where they work on my Sansas. I’ve had to spend barely any time at all fixing any of them, and as such I have never bothered with MP3Tag, EasyTag, and the like. Then again, the vast majority of my music has been ripped from CD’s, and the digital downloads I’ve bought have all worked properly. So I have no complaint with the Sansas’ tag based navigation.

Windows Media Player can tag when you rip, as can Media Monkey, and WinAmp and Nero and I know these for Sure. This is why I dont get why its a big deal. There are enough programs out there to do the job of tagging. Also I would agree that it is a step backwards in a way but it is also a step forward. I cant find any other player that can do both, which is what makes this cool, but at the same time eventually you will see the benifits to having proplerly taged files. I dont think SanDisk should HAVE to do this just to satisfy people (Not everybody who wants this option but rather a select few) who are unwilling to do a little work and tag their files.

Most any ripping program you use today (including the ones already montioned) will ‘automatically’ fill in the tag information from an on-line database when you rip a CD if you are connected on-line. Yes, there are still some people, I don’t want to say ‘out in the sticks’, but rather that for some reason are forced to use dial-up and therefore are not connected 24/7/365 so this could be a fly in the ointment. But for the majority of people today, the convenience is almost taken for granted.

I’ve run into a few CD’s where the database info was flawed. Some are just typos and minor stuff, but I’ve also had the completely wrong CD info come up to where I’ve got to get in there and do some major editing. But these cases are few & far between.

If you get your music on-line, then the tagging is already done for you. Just downlaod and enjoy. But again, there are mistakes made, so it pays to keep an eye on them. So I guess I just can’t understand either, why some people think it’s such a pain. It can take me anywhere from 0 seconds up to maybe 2 minutes to insure a properly tagged CD’s worth of music is ready for loading onto my player. That’s not a huge time investment to guarantee that those songs will display correctly on my player’s menus and on the ‘Now Playing’ screen.

Bottom line, if SanDisk adds folder navigation and it makes some people happy, great. I don’t plan to use it, but there are those who will. Just like the sleep timer. It’s a function I never use, but I’m not going to organize a revolt against it.

Live & let live. As long as the darned thing fires up when I hit the power button and makes joyful sounds in the form of music, I’m happy. Anything else is a bonus!

Probably the people who are really big on folder navigation are the ones that don’t have a lot of albums, and very likely got a lot of their music from downloading…so it doesn’t really matter what ripping programs do.

It just seems like it’d be easy enough to have some tagging program set the Genre tag to the folder name. This could be done on thousands of songs in less than an hour.

Personally, I have a huge music collection, all of which was tagged immaculately before I ever had an mp3 player. I’m very particular about the way I organize my music, though, and I can’t organize it the way I want with tags alone. I like to change my music often - adding, deleting, and shuffling files from folder to folder on almost a daily basis. My old player had the ability to navigate by folder/filename and then view the id-tag info on the ‘now playing’ screen, which was ideal for me. I could view my files on the player the same way I did on my computer. That’s why I would like folder navigation.

However, unlike some people, I was aware of the lack of folder navigation before I bought the Fuze and still chose to buy one anyway because it was a good value. I was very pleased when I heard that folder navigation was on Sandisk’s to-do list. Giving their customers choices and flexibility will put their player above the other “our way or the highway” brands.

This is what most people would like I think, Tags are great for Album art and information, and folders are good for organization. The combination would be really nice.

Please let me explain.

Im the holder of xxxxGB of MP3 data. Mostly compleate albums.

When im going to the gym i want some inspiring and energycing tunes.  Heres what i do.

  1. I make a folder on my computor.

  2. Copy various artists and mp3s to the folder

  3. i download it into my sansa

  4. When i start my sansa and want to listen to the “power tunes” to keep me motivated.

  5. Grrrrrrrr… Not right songs, and in strange order.

So after more time spending to get the right tracks iget in the state of mind = **bleep** OFF i dont want to listen anymore.

A problem.

But ive read that SANSA is working to fix this issue. Is that correct?

Othervise i have to go to the store within 15days and return othervise realy good SANSA.

Some of us who want folder navigation listen to many podcasts. Podcasts are often listened to just once then deleted from the player, so spending time editing tags on these is especially annoying. Quite often tags on podcasts are missing or incorrect. With podcasts it is often also  important that they play in the proper order. With folder navigation, it is easier to be sure that all the files have played, and played just once.

I don’t know where you’re getting your podcasts from, but I have never had to edit a tag on one. MediaMonkey catches them, and tags them just fine. When I was using my Fuze for podcasts, I would just do mass-deletes of each day’s podcasts the next time I connected to the computer, to minimize refresh time. Now I use my 2GB Clip, and delete each one when it’s over…couldn’t possibly be any easier

They are working on it though no time frame has been announced. Implementing this is a bit harder than one may think. A solution for your problem at current may be to use playlists. This is not an easy task sometimes but, it can be done.

The other thing you could do is to when you make your “Power Tunes” folder, make sure you copy your files instead of moving them, then use A tagging software to set all the songs Album As Power Tunes. This way your collection stays unchanged all thats effected are the copys of those  specific   songs .

The other thing At your disposal is the Go list which is a built in customizable playlist.

These are just work arounds for your issue right now.

I agree a play by folder feature would be great.  Especially since our family uses only Linux-based computers, so we can’t make playlists through WMP, etc.  We rely solely on MSC mode, so it would be really nice to be able to create playlists quickly by placing favorite artists/songs in certain folders.  My wife has a Fuze and gets a little frustrated trying to find a single tune to play me sometimes.  I’m shopping for a player myself, with an eye on the Clip, but now that I’m aware of this missing feature, I’m more inclined to look elsewhere (Cowon?).  Yes, I’d pay more to have this feature, at least until creating playlists becomes practical in Linux.

Look around on here. There are many Lunix users here who have successfully made playlists. I dont know how they do it but use the search freature to find it.
