I have a WD MyBook External drive with 3TB storage and have used it for the last 3 years (only) to back-up system files on my HP Desktop computer and to store digital pictures. Recently the hard drive stopped backing up my HP system files. I was able to redirect the back ups to another external drive but cannot delete the old backup files on the WD MyBook external drive. I can see the backup files AND the file folder containing the digital pictures but cannot access them. Every time I click on the folders it just says “Not Responding” and I can only close down the File Explorer session after receiving a “Cyclic Redundancy Check” error. I don’t imagine I need the historical backups but need to access the pictures and move them to another external drive.
The Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is basically a data verification method that detects accidental changes to raw data residing in the storage media. The CRC error occurs due to hard drive corruption, misconfigured files, registry file corruption, cluttered disk, unsuccessful program installation, or when there’s a bad spot on the storage media. CRC error is also a serious issue that must be resolved as soon as possible to avoid a system failure and data loss.
Here are few methods to fix the Cyclic Redundancy Check error:
- Run CHKDSK Utility Scan
- Run SFC Scan
- Use a data recovery tool
