Connected Longevity Question for WD MY PASSPORT External Drive

Are there any known issues or warnings with keeping a WD MY PASSPORT external drive constantly connected (via USB 3.0 cable) to a PC or Laptop?

  • This will be for a low cost backup solution and I’ll be using the Western Digital ‘sleep’ timer in software.

It’s a plug and play drive so, its up to you if you want to plug it in all the time or to plug it in only when required. But plugging it in all the time gonna reduce its life so the best is to plug in the drive only when you want to use it.

Thank You for the Feedback! I’m thinking that my Best option for keeping a “Backup” drive connected, is by choosing the WD My Book Duo or a WD NAS drive option; only thing is, those are pricey.
