Can I use My Passport for Mac for Time Machine backup in OS X 10.6.8?

I bought the WD drive to backup my 2009 MacBook with OS X 10.6.8. It has worked sometimes, most of the time it fails. Some sources say that the drive requires 10.7 or higher. Others seem to think it should work. WD knowledge base doesn’t seem to offer any help, I can’t even find system requirements for the drive which I bought new on Amazon about 2 years ago. The numbers on the back are: “P/N: WDBLUZ0010BSL-05 and S/N: [[DELETED - PRIVACY]]”

Is there anything I can do to make this thing work?

If you are able to successfully reformat your hard drive to HFS+ (Mac OS Extender Journaled), then you should be able to use Apple Time Machine with your hard drive. Formatting instructions are available in the following link:

The steps for Mac OS 10.6.8 are similar to those of Mac OS 10.7.

I think I’d already done that long time ago but I did it again following the directions in the document you sent me. Now the drive won’t show up at all, I get an error message about “RAID Configuration” and then it just disappears from the desktop. This drive worked for a couple of months and then sporadically ever since. I’m done with it. I just plugged in a new Seagate drive and it seems to be working fine with Time Machine. This little “My Passport for Mac” has been a passport to hell and belongs in the trash. Thanks for trying to help.
