Access denied

I have a WDBACY5000ABK external hard drive which I can no longer access: “X:\ is not accessible. Access denied.”

When I first attempted to access this drive I got the following: “X:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.” Someone suggested doing a CHKDSK, which I did, but “Access denied” still came up. I requested help from the Tech Support Forum. Someone suggested using Disk Management to add my user account as owner of the drive. Doing this changed nothing; access is still denied.

this is a user support forum, not WD tech support. and this sub-forum is for the WD mycloud drive but it sounds like you have a USB disk which is a different sub-forum. most people here probably know the WD “friendly” names better then the real model number so I am not sure which device you have

The drive is a 500GB MyPassport Essentials, so presumably the thread has been moved by a mod as it’s now in the correct forum area.

Anyway can you clarify how you are trying to access the drive, simple click on Windows Explorer, or via the command line prompt or some other fashion? Also which version of Windows are you running, and with what sort of user account (an admin account or a normal user account)?

Can you try running with administrator privs and see if you can access the drive then? To do that (under Windows 7 anyway) go to the start menu > All Programs > Accessories, then right-click on Command Prompt then select “Run as administrator” (up near the top). Enter your admin password for your Windows set-up, and then see if you can access the drive (plug it in and type “X:” without the quotes).

Also are you sure that X: is the correct drive letter for the drive? Normally Windows just assigns the next available letter to the drive, and X: seems very high up the alphabet unless you already have a lot of other drives connected to your system or network ones mapped to it?
