8GB Cruzer Edge Write Protector

I was in the middle of copying some files to my 8GB cruzer drive, when suddenly the transfer was

interrupted and I got a “Disk is write protected.  Remove the write protection or use another disk.” error.

I removed the drive, rebooted, but the write protection is still stuck on.  I can read files from the disk,

but can’t add any additional files or delete files from the disk.

This appears to be a common problem with this drive from reading the forum - are there any

known solutions to this other than sending the drive in for exchange?

I am running Windows XP.

Try reformatting the Drive only if you do not have any important files on it.

Can’t format. It says that disk is write protected.

Me too what can I do to fix it

I’ve got the same problem, and hope they could solve it soonly…

I’ve contacted the support, and they decided to chenge a new one for me…

I cancelled a copy of files to a 32G Cruzer and since then,  I cannot copy anything else, cannor delete, 'cause it says its write protected…

don’t get it… these drives do not have a write protection tab.

I’ll call Tech Support in the morning.

thanks,

Same here! I’ve tried everything: Format on Linux, Gparted, etc etc etc…

Everytime the same message: The Drive is Write protected

If it’s _ not _ write-protected, what’s the problem?

Can’t install under Windows XP service pack 3

This is a known hardware error and can’t be fixed. Sandisk is aware of the issue, although there is no official recall for the product. This is an offical answer if you contact customer service:

"I understand that you are getting write protection error while accessing your Cruzer flash drive. The flash drive has detected a potential fault and has become write protected to prevent data loss. There is no method to fix this. You will need to backup your data and replace the flash drive.

Our team of developers is in combination with the OS developers looking into a solution to resolve this issue.

Please note that only a minor percentage of users are experiencing the write protection issue and these are the customers posting on the internet to find a solution."

SOLUTION 1: Return to where you bought and get a refund (as others usb drives might have the same issue)

SOLUTION 2: Contact Sandisk costumer service and get a refund, for the same reasons

I have the same problem.  Yesterday while transferring files I got the read only message.

I have got the data transferred to another drive but my USB drive is now not operable and I can’t even delete fiels from it, so I will have to physically destroy it to safeguard my files.

Not happy with the situation.

Contact SanDisk for an RMA.  http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5232/~/return-material-authorization-(rma)-process

Or maybe call about your situation.  They have allowed destroyed Cruzers to be returned in the past.

Please advise what to do?”

Read replies given to others with same problem, do what the replies say to do.
