8,000 song limit

ok I know I posted this in the update forum but noone answered it so i’m posting it here

someone said that u have to format your fuze to get the 8,000 song limit on your fuze, well after you do that to u also have to re install the new firmware or will it increase by it’s self

Also, is it now possible using folder navigation (i.e., bypassing the database) to play tracks exceeding 8,000?

reformat is reqired to resize the database. you will need to use the format option in the settings menu. it will not erase the firmware but you will need to reload all your songs.

no

Then it’s not really folder “navigation” at all, is it?  I’m guessing the new firmware merely harvests the tracks’ path and filename information during the “refreshing your media” eon and adds it to the database, where it is treated it more or less like another kind of tag, leaving us with the same interminable startup delays as before.

Give those of us who want folder navigation the option – just the option, mind you – to TURN OFF the database scanning and let us traverse the file tree instead, even if it does mean a tradeoff for some other tag-based functionality.  The FUZE will still be a work in progress until then.

Also, why can’t the FUZE at least do playback while charging?

I guess I don’t understand how that works.

I thought folder navigation reads directly from either the internal or external memory directly off the FAT (File Allocation Table) to get it’s information, thus the 8000 track limit would be a non issue.

Does Folder Navigation use the database to get the folder and track name information and then pass it to the user?  If that’s what it does it seems kind of pointless to reinvent the wheel when you could simply just read the information off the FAT and therefore have a method to override the limit (albiet with limited functionality)

If 8000 is exceeded does it merely stop showing folders that are beyond that track limit?

regardless of MTP or MSC the device will have to read all the files and build an internal database. the internal database needs to be resized and this is done by a device format from the settings menu. this only has to be done one time and the limit is set to 8000 files from then on.

The Fuze can do playback while charging, just not when plugged into a computer.  If you purchase a car charger or wall charger (Belkin makes a great kit that has a Car module with a USB port, a Wall module with a USB port, and a Standard Sync cable.  You simply plug the sync cable into the appropriate module and it charges.  Since both the wall module and car module don’t have any “data” lines active, the unit will charge, but will not go into connected mode.

I bought one and because it came with an extra sync cable, I have the benefit of having the car unit available in the car at all times and can still charge at my desk.  And if I need to sync the device, just unplug the USB portion from the wall wart, and plug into the computer…Voila

wow people have that many songs? thats impressive. I  would never think of having that many on a MP3 player

any Car stereo that has usb input on it will play back while charging. My pioneer deck does this and quite nice.heck  I cna  even  hook my Razr 2 V9x phone to my radio and play the songs off that

You can playback while charging.  Buy an AC to USB adapter.  Plug your cable into it.

You cant play back while USB connected.

Thank you.  While I’m not happy about having to lay out added cash for the “luxury” of playback while charging, at least now I know it’s possible.

there is a little work around if you are good with a little piece of scotch tape  all you need to do is cut a small piece of scotch tape just big enough to cover the center 2 pins of the USB connector (the side that connects to the computer) the center 2 pins are used for data and if they are covered the player will charge but it will not connect to the computer. i have a few different sansas that use the same cable so i have one set up for this and one for data transfer but it is pretty easy to remove and replace the tape if you only have one cable.

So we still have to wait for every… single… track to be scanned every time we swap in a new microSD card before the Fuze will permit playback?  That’s outrageous, and especially ureasonable for a device that purports to offer navigation by folder.   What’s wrong with using the memory cards’ File Allocation Tables?

Give us the option.

Hey, that’s a great idea, and like you, I also have a spare cable that could be dedicated solely to this purpose.  Thanks!

That’s far from “outrageous”, as you will have installed a new µSD card.  At one point, the device HAS to read the contents of that card for the database to be built.

On the other hand what IS outrageuos, is the new capacity.  Can I order a 32GB card?  Hehe.

I do want to get a 32 GB card eventually to hold my entire music collection with room to spare.  It is past 8000 tracks.  I understand the memory requirements to build a large database, and I understand that this DB will take a specific amount of internal memory.

I guess my confusion is as follows:

1.  Why can’t the database just be written to the internal storage

2.  Even if there is some programming limit for the database, folder navigation should allow you to directly access the tracks via the FAT (thus bypassing the database)

I don’t care about the database update.  That update gives me advanced sorting functions that simple folder navigation can not.  But at least I can access all my music in some sort.

The player has no way of knowing whats on the card. Even with folder nav, the player has to see what folders are on the card, which will take time. Then if you want the files on the card to play just like the files on the player it has to build the database. I used to think this was a big deal and that 2 or 3 minutes was too long to wait, but what I did was change my method of adding files. I never disconnect from the computer and then immediatly start listening (Have to unplug my headphones from the speakers, log off, etc) and generally by the time I am walking out the door the database is 1/2 done, then by the time I get to the car its almost done, by the time I get plugged in its done. Its not a big deal if you plan a head.

That would be nice.

It just seems sad to me that even when a great firmware update is given to us, there are people that still feel the need to complain…

I know!  You’d think they’d be satisfied after getting the free upgrade to a state of slightly less underperformance.

Still, I understand where you’re coming from.  I once sold a car with only two tires on it to a guy who couldn’t fully check out his purchase in advance.  I couldn’t believe how ungrateful he was when I finally sent him the third tire.
