Did you try removing the drive properly then reboot system and then plug drive back in?
Joe
Dude if that will work I wasted 2 days of life seriously, nope it doesnt I tried it in many computers now the one who has an error is the hard drive itself. It can be formatted but it will also kill my files
Have you tried searching for data recovery software that will restore partitions? That may be your best bet.
I have the same problem with my Bok 500. I searched for recovery software, but the one i eed costs about $60. Anyone know of a partition recovery software for free?
Dude try Recuva but I dont know it doesnt work on my HD
For I quick format my HD and use Recuva waited for 30 hours with no avail
Recuva give me results like this,

I’m so **bleep** Up, because someone told me to this but now he is hiding from me
The 2 pics show that Recuva found data could you restore them? I used it a long time ago and it is time consuming fiding files you want. I did salvage a lot of mine. Now you see why data recovery is so expensive.
Joe
Yeah I can recover it but those files are useless, Im looking for my other files much more significant
Do a search for Test Disk and see if that helps. It’s a suggestion, so try at your own risk.
THAT'S CORRECT, WITH TEST DISK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO REPAIR YOU R PARTITION IN CASE THAT IT IS DAMAGED OR CORRUPTED. YOU CAN ALSO TRY FILESCAVENGER BUT TRY TO GET ONLINE THE FULL VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE SINCE THE TRIAL VERSION WILL BE ONLY ABLE TO RECOVER FILES SMALLER THAN 64 K.
ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU.
HAVE YOU SETUP A PASSWORD ON THIS DRIVE AND WHICH ONE IS THE MODEL OF YOUR UNIT?
Tried Test Disk but when my external is not yet quick formatted, it results to nothing for in the last step he ask me where is the partition but there is no partition showing up my external hard drive that goes with filescavenger. There is no password in the drive and my model unit if I’m right is My Book 2tb Essential
I currently have the same issue with my 1TB WD Elements hard drive, except I cannot find any files other than the WD SmartWare files. I have emailed WD support but they have not yet gotten back to me. Unfortunately I actually had to remove the hard drive from the enclosure because my enclosure is broken, and I have run the Data Lifeguard tests extensively, coming up with no errors or disk failures. I am not sure what is going on. I have tried Recuva, TestDisk, RecoverMyFiles, GetDataBack, Partition Magic, Acronis Disk Director, and iRecover to no avail. One thing that I would recommend, if you have the time, is to download Knoppix, burn it to a CD, and boot up into that to see if you can locate the files on your hard drive. Ultimately, I am sure that you do not want to lose your hard drive, but even if you had to get a new one and still had access to the old files from within LinuxLive (Knoppix) that would be better than nothing. I am currently in the process of downloading it, and I will let you know if I have any success with any of my attempts. I’m in my 8th straight day of trying to recover 1TB of files, and I have not had any success.
-S.O.S.
Let me know if Knoppix worked for you. I bought a 2TB My Book Essential about two weeks ago, started having connection issues with it disconnecting/reconnecting the usb connection on it’s own (and giving usb device not recognized messages). I decided to just take out the hard drive and use it without the external case, plugged it in, and have the same problem: a bunch of unallocated space that no data/partition recovery program can seem to find. 1.5TB of important data lost… unless someone finds a solution.
(I’ve tried pretty much everything. I’ve used the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD), PhotoRec/TestDisk, Recuva, Knoppix, Mandriva Linux, and a wide array of different recovery programs to no avail. The only one that yielded any results was PhotoRec, and that’s only because the drive is encrypted when it comes from Western Digital so the software brings back false positives. I of course got the runaround from the customer service rep that I talked to, and unfortunately I have not figure out a way to decrypt the drive because they will not help you out unless it is still in the original case, without any hardware problems. I ended up reformatting my drive and trying to recover the files, again with all the same software, but I got nothing. The customer service rep told me that “since the drive did not show up it was empty” and I find it hard to believe that moving it from one enclosure to another over the course of about 20 seconds can erase 1TB of data. Sorry man, I really don’t know what to tell you. I spent 4 straight days working on mine, and I got absolutely nothing.
If you reformatted the drive the data is gone.
Well I reformatted it after 3 days of attempting to take the data off of it. It was only a quick format, I did not put anything on the drive, and I have extracted data from several different drives after a quick format before. Most programs only write 0’s to the drive if you specify as such, and I don’t believe that Microsoft includes anything like that in their operating systems, especially with quickformat.
