I have this model wd my book essential edition hard drive. I have used it in the past on a xp system. Got a new tower with windows 10 on it. How can I get this thing to work on there? I have also tried to run it again on xp and vista and it shows up but I can’t get into it because it doesn’t create a drive for it. I have a lot of info and stuff to get off of it, how do i get this thing to work again??? oh and another thing that is crazy, I called WD and gave them my serial number that is on it and they say they can’t find it, how does that work?
Hi,
Is the drive showing under disk management?
Plug the drive into a USB2 port…if it still has one. Your tower may only have USB3 ports, don’t know. Wait for Win 10 to identify the drive, it could take a minute or more. You should see a popup screen at lower right of screen advising you that it is installing new hardware.
Alternately, use an ESATA cable and plug it into an ESATA port on your desktop. You can get ESATA ports on brackets that will sit in a card slot on your tower and plug into an ESATA port on your motherboard.
NOTE: An ESATA cable is different than a normal SATA cable.
If nothing happens in a minute or so, open Computer Management/Disk Management.
In disk manager, look for your drive.
