WD Smartware - keeping deleted files

Hi

I have several WD drives, the latest is a Passport Ultra. It came with the software WD Smartware.

Yeh, well. It does COPY new files created on the source disc to the target (PW Ultra), BUT it doesn’t delete files that are DELETED on the source disc.

In my opinion this is useless, because I have to keep track of the deleted files and delete them manually on the backup device. Unless I don’t want to have a huge caos in my backup.

I use the following settings:

  • Backup continously

  • Only keep 1 instance of the files

Is it any setting I have missed or IS THIS THE WAY “smartware” works?

Best Regards:

Maria

It’s the way Smartware works - it’s backup software, not synchronisation software.

For example if you accidentally deleted a file that you wanted, your normal response would be to go to your backup and recover it. But if Smartware had also done the same you would be lost, whereas with the current set-up then you still have the mirror version readily available.

If you want more in-depth features and management, you may well be better investing in a specific and separate backup software package from another vendor, and just use your WD device as it’s destination to back up to.
