WD SmartWare software installed into PC to support WD MyBook Live Duo caused impossibility to connect (another) MyBook WD3200D via USB. Computers cannot recognize MyBook and cannot read files. Comp with W7 offers formatting of connected disk. The behaviour was proved on 4 computers with WXP sp3 and W7 Starter edition. After uninstallation of the SmartWare sw all is working well. My opinion: WD SamrtWare software should be modified!

Smartware might not be the issue here. With both drive connected to your computer check Disk Management and verify if they are both Online.
