I have a WD 2TB MyPassport Wireless Drive. I have turned it on and changed the wireless name on my Mac to point to “MyPassport”. On my web browser when i type “MyPassport.local” nothing seems to happen. How do I go to the dashboard of the drive?
You can use “http://192.168.60.1”
Thank You. That worked just fine. But I have forgotten my password to get to the dashboard. Is there a way to reset the password without formatting the drive? I have a lot of documents on the drive that i need.
power down MPW, press and hold the wifi button then also press and hold the power button. Hold those two buttons for 20 seconds then release, that should put the unit back to factory default.
Thanks, but will it erase everything on the drive if I do that?
No, it just restore all the setting back to factory default. It will not touch the user data.
I found the link to WD My passport wireless manual.
Sorry jebusx, you have this incorrect on a couple of points; the main one is the MPW has to be ON, not off to accomplish the reset to factory defaults. If not one can screw up the MPW and get flashing red LEDs. The other point is hold the two buttons in simultaneously for 10 seconds or until the MPW reboots.
OK here are the correct and complete instructions I wrote here a year ago in a post. Info taken from WD user manual and FAQs for MPW. BTW, DShah999, if you have not yet downloaded the user manual, do so from WD Support. If you have trouble remembering passwords, write them down in a computer file you can refer to! Good grief, we have too many passwords to remember today, and mine are kept updated in a password-protected file, so I only need to completely remember just the one password for that file.
Anyway: my earlier post about how to restore MPW says:
I suggest you return MPW to factory defaults. It will clear any passwords, and afterward your MPW will be like it was out of the box, and you need to set it up again, enter the password, etc, and be sure you remember the password. Follow these instructions carefully, and your MPW must be ON and fully booted before proceeding.
Important – the MPW must be ON when you do the restore or you will cause major problems that are hard to recover from. MPW can not be connected to a computer, and it needs to be fully charged.
System Restore (No UI):
*Do NOT have an SD card in the drive.
- Power ON device. Wait till both lights are solid (Fully Booted)
2.Hold both buttons in for 10 seconds (or until the device reboots)
3.When it boots up it will be in a fresh state, with the exception of the drive. The drive is not touched with this restore.
Make SURE unit is ON before restoring to defaults.
Once restored you can set it up like it was brand new again. If you don’t have the full user manual to refer to, first download it from WD Support and refer it for set up procedures.
There are Sample Media files you can play from the MPW to your phone. No need to connect MPW to your computer until you have confirmed the My Cloud app works to access these media files.
Be sure you are away from other electronic devices while setting up – move far enough away with phone and MPW before doing restore and then set up. I also found using an iPad instead of an iPhone made setting up easier.
If you happen to do the restore incorrectly, and get red flashing LEDs, just turn it off with power button and write back here, I can help you fix it. Good luck
Thank you for the correction Mike. It just a typo, the number 2 was next to the 1. 10 seconds will do. I didn’t know that holding 20 second will make the LEDs flash RED. What happen when it flash RED. Will that delete the user DATA?
You need to re-read my comments. The WRONG thing to do is to attempt resetting of the MPW when it is not ON, having it off will cause red LED flashing and make the device unusable and the user guide says to contact WD if this happens. But, I know how to fix this, but really don’t want to go into how unless necessary.
Holding buttons in for 20 seconds would not cause the problem, but the instructions say hold them in for 10 seconds or until the MPW reboots…
OK, I will explain after all:
If red LEDs flash from this, turn off MPW. Let it completely shut down, then restart it and let it fully boot. Now, with unit ON, do the two-button reset again.
This should fix things, BUT the MPW most likely rebooted with the original firmware embedded in unit, and the firmware needs to be updated to current version.
Now, does anyone want to go through this, no, so reset properly!
Thank You all for the assistance. Seems like it worked well.
Hi mike27oct.
I thought I followed your instructions - had the MPW ON and no sd card in the slot, pushed both buttons simultaneously. I had a white led fr about a minute and then the red lights began flashing. I shut it down and am not writing you for help, since you seem to be knowledgable. I have a MPW 1T, for what it’s worth and wanted to get it back to factory default because I was having issues not being able to access the dashboard AFTER connecting the MPW directly to my computer.
Can you give me some suggestions, short of contacting WD? Thanks.
Do you mean seeing the Dashboard while MPW is connected to the computer? If so, this cannot be done. The Dashboard is for accessing/using via a browser (either on computer, iPhone or iPad when device is being used wirelessly). To see folders and files only, MPW needs to be connected to computer via the USB cable, just like any other drive.
I also do not think you waited long enough for the factory restore to happen. Wait five minutes or so for it all to do what it needs to do. Yes, you will get flashing LEDs of different colors for a while, it even may appear it is finished in a minute or so, but it is just reloading the default settings etc, and after about five minutes or so you will see the LEDs light normally with Wi-Fi LED Blue, and battery Blue (if fully charged, or color indicating what percent charge it is). Be sure enough charge is in MPW to do the lob, at least the color right under Blue is lit for battery (green??) LED.
So, let me know how it goes.
Yes, I know I can’t access Dashboard while MPW is connected to the computer.
Once the red LEDs started flashing, I turned off the unit then tried to restart it and then tried to reset the unit again. It looks like it’s doing it but then very quickly goes to two blue LEDs.
I also find that I can’t access the Dashboard now. It gets so far and stops. Now sure what is going on.
OK, it sounds like the MPW got reset, because two blue LEDs came up and stayed up. SO, turn the MPW off, and then restart it again and be sure it comes up as working with the two correct LEDs. So, if you have mobile phone or tablet in iOS or Android form, can you access the drive and play any of the Sample Media that came on the drive?
Not sure if all is working why the Dashboard is inaccessible. Need to think about this one some more. What device and browser are you trying to access the Dashboard with? Are you using the My Cloud app?. Tell me more about the devices used, like brand and type e.g. iPhone, iPad, Android devices. Lots of things at play here. For example I always access the Dashboard on my iPad and use the Safari browser, Phone is too small and Win computer too clunkyand not always available for my style.
