I purchased this unit on Jan 7, 2012 and since connecting to my XP SP3 PRO system using the provided cable to a USB 2.0 port I have backed up over 1.6 TB of data with no apparent issues but about once an hour my event viewer system log now throws a warning Event 51 error during a paging operation for this device. I have another USB attached HD and do not get this error from it.
Is this a configuration issue such as sleep mode for the drive or what?
Prior to attaching this device I was not getting this error from any drives on this system. This is the only drive that generates the error. There is no hub between the drive and the system. Only the provided cable.

Well dude, what you can do is to disable the sleep timer for the drive for testing, also disabling the drive’s software (Skynet/Smartware), Smartware also has a testing tool for the drive under drive settings… It can be a drive fault.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion. I turned off sleep after I posted this question and the alerts stopped showing up in the event log but that is a band-aid solution. The driver should handle this gracefully don’t you think?
The sleep mode should increase the life of the drive especially since it is in an enclosure that lacks a fan for cooling. So, having it sleep after not being active for a while is better for the drive, my electric bill, and the environment. WD should address this issues in the driver if it hasn’t in the recent update.
I plan to apply the update and then I will see if that fixes this problem without disabling sleep mode 100%.
