WD My Passport Ultra will not show up on Mac or PC

I received my “My Passport Ultra” drive yesterday, with the intention of backing up my Mac Book Pro. When I attached the drive I received an error message about the drive being unreadable. I thought it might be an issue with the Passport and the Mac, so I brought it to work today to try on my PC here, and it won’t register in explorer at all. I tried downloading drivers, updates, etc, but nothing works, and nothing is straight forward. I don’t have time to keep trouble shooting, so I guess I will just send it back, and call it ‘defective’, but if I am missing something simple, I wanted to check.
I should also mention the drive is showing up on things like WD Drive Utilities (which I installed), and it’s whirring away, so it’s on and it’s “there”, I just can’t access it.

It looks like several people are having similar problems, but nothing that is exactly the same (that I’ve found), and I’ve not been able to find a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello,

I recommend you try some basic troubleshooting:

For Windows:

1- Disconnect the drive from the computer and restart the computer.

2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the PC, not through a hub).

3- Make sure you hear the connection sound windows makes when recognizes a USB device.

4- Go to "Disk Management” to verify if the drive shows up there.

If the drive shows up in Disk Management but it is not seen on Computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.

For Mac

1- Disconnect the drive from the computer and restart the computer.

2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the computer, not through a hub).

3- Go to "Disk Utility” to verify if the drive shows up there.

If the drive shows up in Disk Utility but it is not seen on the computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.
