Dear all,
After digging around on the forums and attempting some of the suggested solutions to similar issues I decided to post this as so far I am not in luck… This is regarding some problems I’ve ran into with arecently purchased 1TB My Passport.
I have two of these (one which works perfectly fine) so have tried swapping cables but no luck there. I purchased these disks for the purpose of using them as backups and started to move quite a bit of stuff from my laptop hard drive over to them - most of it to the disk that is now acting up. It all worked well until yesterday but now as I plug it in I just get a flashing light and the drive does not show up in “My Computer” - the computer does detect it, occasionally (mainly when I have both drives plugged in), but the faulty one shows up as something else with 0k of 0k available disk space (?!). Similarly, in WD SmartWare and the Pandora Recovery program it appears, but doesn’t indicate the size of the drive and I can’t make any changes to it whatsoever. The full size of the disk appears in Disk Management only when I have both WD drives plugged in but even then I can’t view the files of the faulty disks (Disk Management shows it as empty, even) and I can’t change the drive letter/path or attempt to format it due to the “console view is not up to date” error message. I have tried different ports - still nothing.
Through Pandora I’ve been able to recover most of what is now stuck on the faulty drive and have transferred it to the second, so-far operational, WD drive so the data loss has been minimal but since I bought these drives in order to be able to do a bit of spring cleaning on my laptop the fact that one of these disks are acting up after only a couple of uses is kind of worrying. As it stands I can’t do anything with it - most of the time my laptop just freezes when I attemt to do anything while the screwed up drive is plugged in, and I am not even being prompted to format it until the very moment I unplug it. Are there ways around this?
If you need me to be more specific please do let me know - I would be most thankful for any help in resolving these issues! The data loss is something I’ve been able to deal with but if whatever happened has rendered the drive completely unusable then I would at least appreciate suggestions/ideas regarding how this happened and how I can avoid this in the future…
Many kind thanks in advance,
Jonas
