WD My Book Essentials is safe?

I’ll buy a WD My Book Essential. But out there I read that the encryption use a chip on the case. So if this is damaged I will have my data but I never gonna recover it?

I honestly do not see much use for encryption because I’ll only store programs and nothing personal. Will there be any option to not encrypt the information and if the box is damaged can recover my info?
