WD Element USB connector broken

It’s disconnected and rattling around inside the case, and my friend can’t plug it in. My friend doesn’t want to lose the data. Does anyone have any advice on how to save the data?

Thanks,

Pretty simple to fix … (assuming it’s a 3.5" WD Elements Desktop Drive and not a 2.5" or a My Book)

  • Disassemble it and remove the Hard Drive
  • Remove the USB plug-in board from the Hard Drive revealing the standard SATA connection.
  • Buy a 3rd party SATA 3.5" USB Enclosure (AC Powered) approx $20~30
  • Insert Hard Drive
  • Plug into Computer
  • Data will be there

WD Elements have no encryption which is why you can simply remove the Hard Drive and whack it in another case and Bob’s Your Uncle.

If it was a WD Book (which have Hardware Encryption) then he’d be screwed
