WD Drive Unlock for users (with NO Administrator rights)

Hi there, There’s thousands of old threads about this (at least since 2012), but none with a solution.

Is it possible than 3 years later WD have not yet addressed this issue ?

How can a Corporate user, use such (very useful) feature if he cannot run the WD Drive Unlock ?!

Note that:

  • NO users will never get admin privileges on their computer

  • NO IT service won’t install by default* WD Security or any service to run unlock (* or per user)

So is there any workaround ? Thanks,

Welcome to the WD Community.

What’s the model number of the drive that have?

Have you tried removing the security on the drive?

Thanks,

P/N WDBPGC5000ARD-05 (WD Passport Ultra 500Mb)

Removing or setting the security via the user “private computer” is not a problem.

User just can’t unlock the drive on “company computer” as he don’t have administrator rights on it.

(Drive Unlock request elevated permissions to run)

Hi,

Agree ! this is totally ridiculous, the only reason I bought “my passport” instead of element is for the hardware encryption.

Now I am at work, and I cannot even use the drive…

This is a major issue for WD, addressed since many years in multiple threads, and nobody seems to care… Is-this how WD is considering its customer ?

Solutions exists, and they are not difficult to implement, and if it is not the case, let’s at least have a statement from a WD, then this need to be clearly highlighted on the specs of the HDD…

This is very disappointing.

Kind regards

F

I have to my passport that are completely useless. This problem should have been resolved or at least been given an official explanation. Warn people not to buy my passport if they wish to use on computers that are not administrators.
