Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:
I have a new one of these, connected to my MacBook Air. WD does not provide Dashboard software for the Mac, so I have no means of using it to look up/control any features.
The thing sits on my desk, everything it working fine, but like others I’ve -never- heard the fan come on and it feels like the thing is way too hot.
I’m sorry to hear your fan doesnt come on, mine does come on and sounds like its now failing, a pulsating whiring, thats new.
I was able to monitor the temperatures as shown in my previous posts. You might want to do the same? I use CPUID HWMonitor for this, there are many options.
I’ve just downloaded the WD Drive Utilities to run diagnostics and update my support ticket due to the new failing fan sound.
@bobjames - I appreciate your response. Was excited for a moment, but you’re correct…the Mac version of WD Drive Utilities does not support the D50 Game Dock, and there’s no version of the Dashboard software for the Mac.
i’m not sure but if they are using MAUI to dev the windows app, it might be portable to OSX
developing multiple apps at the same time isnt so easy, i find it easier to get them done one at a time, lessons learned in main dev then transfer to other platforms, however MAUI promises one code base for all the platforms
Hey @bobjames@MRyanNYC - Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I’m looking at buying this dock for my girlfriend and wanted to ask about your experience. I’ve seen a lot of reports saying it runs quite hot, which made me hesitate a bit. Did you ever find a good solution for this? Was there maybe a firmware update that helped? (If so, I’d probably need to ask someone with a Windows machine to do it, since there’s no companion software for Macs.)
I’ve also read that some people added heatsinks or even fans, but since the version I’m considering already comes with a 2TB drive, I’m worried about voiding the warranty if I start modifying it. It really does look like an amazing piece of hardware — especially for the price — so I’d love to hear how things worked out for you.
@Gofra I’m still using the drive and hub, and it’s all working fine. I’m on a Mac, and there’s no software support for me. So I cannot check drive info, fan info, etc. Disappointed that a company as large as WD (now Sandisk) can’t make that happen.
That said, all is working well after all this time. The exterior is still warmer than I’d like, and I literally cannot tell if a fan is even running (I’ve never felt any vibration or any sound indicators that one is), but it hasn’t led to any problems.
If you can get the device at a discount, it’s a nice accessory…even though it’s not supported well.
Awesome - great to hear it’s still working as intended! Thank you for getting back to me <3
Do you happen to know what drive is installed in the 2TB version? Did you ever experience any noticeable slow-downs? It would mainly be used to open, work on and save Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop files, roughly between 0,5 and 1GB in size - I guess I shouldn’t be too concerned? I’d say if the housing gets hot that’s actually good as it means the heat dissipates well from the inside. Not sure how the drives are affected though…
For me personally, I use the drive only as a backup drive to my main system, and as a Thunderbolt hub. So I really can’t speak to drive speed for daily use with applications, gaming, etc.
