WD Black AN1500 runs hot

Hello WD community,

Awhile ago I bought a WD Black AN1500 2TB for my PC since I didn’t have another M.2 slot to spare. The add-in card itself seems well-built and has nice lighting, all that nice stuff, but it gets very hot despite the large heatsink included in the card. When my GPU has been hard at work and the case heats up I’ve seen it get to almost 75 degrees Celsius according to the WD dashboard. And this is despite getting an exhaust fan which is located in the nearest slot.

As I understand it the AN1500 is pretty much two SN750s running RAID 0 but where is the temperature sensor located? Is the heat sink not doing its job? The card is closer than I’d like to my GPU which is a 2.75 slot RTX 2080 XC Ultra but that was the only PCIe slot with enough lanes.

How serious of a problem is this high temperature? Short of getting a new MOBO with an arrangement that puts the card further away from my GPU what else can I do? I’d rather not try to return the thing.

I suspect you should be seeing severe throttling on the AN1500. The data sheet for the AN1500 states a 35C operating temperature max. You could try running another fan directly over it.
