I am using Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite. I just purchased My Passport for Mac - what I thought was an external hard drive. I want to use it only as an external hard drive not a backup. Is this possible? I tried to partition it for every thing except passport, but not sure that was the right thing to do either. 
Have I purchased the wrong thing?
You can perfectly use the device as a simple external hard drive. You do not need to install any of the bundled applications or activate Apple’s Time Machine in order to use it. Once connected it should be displayed on Finder.
Thanks! I must have installed something I should not have. I have to WD drives showing on my desk top. One I can save two and the other wants to run all the time as if it is trying to back up. Not sure. I can drag a single image to the drive but when I try to drag an entire folder to the drive it will not take it. Feeling discouraged.
