One thing to keep in mind, my experience with USB 3.0 and external drives…
I connected a USB 3 drive to my PC and almost right away I noticed my 2.4 ghz wireless mouse started acting up. It wouldn’t move the cursor then it would, then it would disappear or get very erratic. Thought maybe it was time for a new battery but that wasn’t it either. What it was was RF (Radio Frequency) interference from the USB 3 drive!! As soon as I disconnected the drive, the mouse was normal. Re-connect the drive, and the mouse would be erratic again. It’s not just WD drives either as it happened with other brands. I know it sounds crazy but it was the drives causing it. I tried different cables with no joy. Moving the dongle for the mouse as far away from the drives as I could ended the issue. So just beware…stuff happens.
Personally, I like the aluminum enclosures because they dissipate heat better. The WD My Books are not bad because they have plenty of vents and enough space between the drive and case for it to breathe and stay cool. However, they do not contain a RF shield. If they did, I bet that your wireless mouse would not act up while it’s on. Aluminum enclosures are basically their own RF shield, where external drives with plastic enclosures don’t contain any shielding.
