Virtual CD (VCD) Manager for Mac does not detect drive to configure

I am installing WD SmartWare. Step 2: Download and Run the VCD Manager.

The Drive to Configure is not detected even though the My Book icon is displayed on the desktop and accessible to the system.

“Drive to Configure” pull down menu does not display any drives and does not pull down.

Any ideas?

If you have one of the newer drives with an automatic VCD that only shows up when there’s an active password, then it’s not going to work.

I bought the drive only last week so I guess it is the newer one, but how can you set the password if you cannot start the SmartWare application? Every time I open SmartWare I just get the message that I am already running the latest version of the software! Hence the reason why  I am trying to re-insall this application.

This is very frustrating because the last My Book for Mac I bought worked perfectly!

The drive and VCD have nothing to do with it. Manually uninstall Smartware alone from your list of applications and install the program again, you can download the installation file  from this link. If it still doesn’t work then Smartware is refusing to install on your compputer and what you can do is to install Smartware on another computer just to create the password. The drive will keep the password and show the unlocker VCD to unlock the drive on computers without Smartware.

I appreciate your help but not joy.

I tried installing WD SmartWare VCD Manager from a different Mac and the install still fails. When asked to select “Drive to configure:”, no drive is found and no drive appears in the pull down menu.

This is a bummer because the last My Book for Mac worked perfectly without all this hassle!

You don’t need the VCD manager. The newer drives are not compatible with it because it they have an automatic VCD that only shows up after creating a password. What you have to install is the Smartware application itself, not the VCD manager.
