Hello all. I recently picked up the 4TB My Cloud and am having a heck of a time playing videos I have created when I am not at home. It seems to work best, and only work, when I am sitting next to the unit at home. When I am away from home, the video will start to play and at around 2 seconds in, it will buffer for what seems to be an eternity. I end up downloading the video to my phone to play. This seems like it defeats the purpose of having an app that you can use remotely. I have tried to find better apps to use but the only one that seems to work, when it does, is PlayerXtreme. Some other users I have added to my cloud have apple devices and seem to have similar problems.
I was previously using OneDrive. This was much easier to use but had way less storage and I was paying monthly for it.
I guess I am just looking to be pointed in the right direction. Did I not set this up correctly? Is there a better app to use? Why doesn’t WD make the mobile app compatible to play on your phone’s default player?
The videos are in mp4 format. Around 250 - 800MB. Phone is Moto Z Force Droid, Android version 7.0
I appreciate any info that could help. Thanks!
What is your broadband upload speed from the My Cloud? Run a Speedtest (http://www.speedtest.net/) to find your broadband upload speed while on the same local network as the My Cloud. Being able to stream media remotely is highly dependent on the upload speed of the broadband connection on your local network the My Cloud resides on and the download speed of the remote connection.
What is the remote connection’s download speed?
Buffering is a good indicator that the connection speed isn’t capable of streaming.
Next, I assume since you didn’t specificity say it, you are using the WD My Cloud app for Android or iOS. If this is not the case what app is being used to access the My Cloud remotely?
Thanks for the response. I have no idea what those things are sorry.
So the internet/Wi-Fi has to be super fast to be able to watch my videos when I am away from my home?
Yes we are all using the same WD MyCloud app for Android and Apple.
You need to have good bandwidth on both ends; at your home and from where you are connecting from, otherwise you could have a deadly slow connection not suitable for video streaming.
You should be able to sit anywhere in home you have a good wi-fi signal on 5G. Sitting next to the My Cloud has nothing to do with it unless your router is nearby, too. It is your router you are connecting to, not the My Cloud.
You should be using the My Cloud app, it works best…
Run a speed test using the link I provided in the above post (here it is again: http://www.speedtest.net/) while on the same local network as the My Cloud. The speed test will give you a general idea of your upload speed.
Then run that same speed test from the remote location to see the download speed. If using a mobile device on a mobile network (not WiFi) then check your mobile device to ensure it is using the fastest possible connection (if cellular data then 4G). If you don’t know how then perform an internet search of your mobile device and cellular carrier/provider for more information.
Yes. There are a number of factors that can impact the ability to remotely stream media from a My Cloud. Among them the upload speed from the My Cloud to the internet and your device’s remote download speed from the internet can impact the ability to stream media.
Thanks for the info. Yes I am sitting next to the router when I get the best results. I can notice a huge difference from the other end of my home.
Looks like you could use some range extenders! I have one for each band, 2.4G and 5G.
