Time Machine and two computers

Mac Air backed up last week with Time Machine on My Passport for Mac.

Today water spilled on it.  May or may not recover.

Can I use that Time Machine back up to update this old MacBook Pro?

Yes, You should be able to recover that Time Machine backup on any Mac using Time Machine.

When I hook up my old computer to the My Passport external, Time Machine runs but says there is not enough space on that drive.  I don’t really want to do a back up of this computer but to merge newest data on both.

Guess I don’t know the steps to access the backup from the other computer on that drive and make it work on this one.
