The question nobody seems able to answer - how much power does my WD My Passport Ultra use?

I bought two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 drives for my new MacBook Pro retina 13 inch. One for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I ran into a problem with one of them. It seems to drain power from the bus and cause the wifi to slow down and stop, disconnecting the MBP from the Internet!

Apple support says it appeared the WD was pulling too much power from the bus and affecting the mother board including the wifi.

The other one seems to be fine. And it’s not the port either - the same thing happened regardless of the port it was connected to.

Anyway, I returned it as defective and a new one arrived today and I just finished reformatting it for the Mac and am making a new cloned backup.

Naturally I am concerned though, and wanted to check the specs and find out how much power it should draw. I hope not more than 900 mA, which is what most good self-powered USB 3 hubs are rated for per port.

I called WD and the tech support didn’t know. And I couldn’t find it mentioned in the specs anywhere. Anybody know?

Thanks,

doug

Hi well I do not know the specs but I run 2 passport ultra drives from a powered usb 3 hub with no problems. I am getting in the 90 to 100 meg transfer.
