I want to replace the hard drive in my computer and thought I could use MyBook to back up the system files. MyBook literature says that the system files can’t be backed up? Can anyone help me understand how to back up the system files, windows, and program files?

Smartware only backs up selected files not the whole system. What version of Windows? Easuse has free software http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm Macrium also is free http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp and Paragon http://www.paragon-software.com/free/ I use Acronis True Iamage Paid. WD has a free version http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en but some have had problems with it. I would recommend buying Acronis TI http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/index.html I’ve done a restore with it in less than 15 min. Any of the free versions will have some features missing. Also do some reading on cloning and imaging before you decide how to proceed. All of the products I mentioned have their supporters.
