SOLVED: New Elements 2 TB disk won't format, erase, or partition on Mac, updated below

Hello all, I’m on my second Elements 2TB drive that I cannot format using Disk Utility. I 'm attaching the drive using the supplied USD cable and it appears on my desktop as an Elements disk, but when I use Disk Utility to format the disk for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it gives me the following message:

Partition Failed

Partion failed with the following error:

File system formatter failed

I can format the disk for FAT 32 without trouble and the the disk appears on my desktop.

I’ve restarted, rebuilt permissions, and moved the disk to another Mac to try Disk Utility and it reports the same error.

I’m running OS 10.5.8 on a Macbook (Intel) and on a PowerMac G5.

UPDATE: Found the resolution to this issue: First, reformat to 2 partitions in DIsk Utility, both Mac OS Journaled Extended, and make sure to click the Options button directly below the partition window for both partions, and choose the appropriate scheme - for me it was GUID. THis will create two partitions. You can now repeat this process and choose one partion.
