as much as i like the smartware, it is a **bleep** resource hog that uses far too much memory and processor time. it is always getting in the way of other softwares that i run because it apparently does not have an efficient indexing system. wdfme - uses 50% of my cpu (dual processor amd 64 bit at 2.3 ghz) and 130-180+ megs of memory. this is really unreasonable and poor software design. and i don’t make a lot of file modifications. i run a bit torrent client 24/7 that processes movies, but i have eliminated that catagory (as much as possible). unfortunately mp4 is considered music yet the majority of my mp4 files are movies in the gigabyte range. so i am getting backups i don’t want because i do want and need my music backed up.
Smartware bloats the system because it is always scanning for changes on any compatible file to make the copy right away. You can uninstall Smartware and use any other backup software (Free or not) that works for you. I use Windows Backup on W7.
don’t most other backup solutions require a dedicated drive? if so, i guess i could partition mybook, but i really don’t want to do that because i keep adding files to non smartware folder i have created. i archive a lot of stuff that does not need backing up. i already have a 500 gig drive, a 1tb (wd by the way) drive and now the 2 tb mybook. i like the idea of non fixed partitions on the mybook because of the way i use the space.
i just wish smartware was rewritten and more efficient code and am hoping that the new version as indicated in some other thread on this board is that in addition to it supposedly containing the ability to specify files/folders for inclusion/exclusion.
i understand the need for wdfme and generally it does not get in the way except when it decides it wants to do a complete catagory reorg as it was doing that prompted me to start this thread/complaint. periodically it seems to just go bonkers with memory and cpu time and that is my issue.
