I bought a WDTV Live Hub primarily to stream Slingbox remotely without having to use a PC. I have a Slingbox 500 with the latest firmware and have updated the WDTV Live Hub with the latest firmware.
My experiences to-date:
The Slingplayer app won’t show better than “Good” even though I am hardwired to the router and getting over 20MBs download.
The Slingplayer remote has an unacceptably long delay and does not come with an appropriate UI emulating a cable box remote.
I get frequent disconnects.
I feel I have been seriously misled by WD. The product team should have never allowed the Slingplayer to have been announced with such poor characteristics.
As a result, all I have is a 1TB Network drive for backup and a nice Netflix streaming device. Unfortunately, I had to keep my PC attached to my TV so I can get the Netflix from a browser and I ALREADY have another Network drive.
Never buying any type of WD product again. Can’t trust product team and validity of annouce process to deliver quality product.
I have spent the past few weeks working with the WD Service and Support Team. Shortly after I first posted this thread I was contacted. We dissected the issues, worked on solutions and tested them out in multiple locations. Throughout, they followed up as promised time and time again and properly set my level of expectations while offering good suggestions on how to get consistent service.
I am pleased with both the product as well as the level of support I received.
I want to single out Alex as a good example of an employee who not only knows his product but is patient, always follows through and doesn’t quit until the problem is solved. Thanks Alex.
I began having similarly bad issues with the WDTV around the beginning of January.
The bandwidth on the slingplayer won’t go above 1200-1300kbps. It is clearly capped somewhere in the firmware as its always floating around 1000.
I have a boxee box also on the same network and it doesn’t have this problem.
I did not always have this issue. When I first got the wdtv it would be 5000kbps no problem. Suddenly one day it was bad. I checked the info screen and it is around 1000. Swapped Ethernet cables. Reset router, modem etc. even tried streaming tethered to my LTE iPhone via wifi. Tried a neighbours fibre wifi. Same thing. Won’t go above 1000-1400peak.
As I said. The boxee box at the same spot on the same wires will hit 5000 still.
