Hi, I know this has been asked many times before but can I confirm that you still cannot use this encrypted external SSD without admin rights on Windows? Has anybody ever managed to find a solution to this?
I feel like I need to double check this because I literally cannot comprehend how this product can be sold if it is basically unusable for any work-related purposes. Most people do not have admin rights on their work PCs or laptops.
Unfortunately, you still can’t use WD’s encrypted external SSDs without admin rights on Windows. The unlock software needs to load a driver for the hardware encryption, and Windows blocks that if you’re not an admin. There’s really no workaround people have found, so if you don’t have admin rights, the drive just won’t unlock. I get how frustrating that is for work setups, but that’s just how WD designed it. If you need something that works in a locked-down environment, you’d want to look at a different option, like a hardware-encrypted drive with its own keypad.
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD requires SanDisk SecureAccess or access via Device Manager in driver-free mode when used in a Windows environment without administrator privileges.
