Replacing Hard Drive on My Book - Write Protected

I’ve had to replaced the HD as the original one had died.  I went and bought a new drive from a local computer store.  Plugged it in to a new Windows 7 machine and drivers were installed.  It says that the drive is ready to be use but I don’t see a drive letter for the HD in windows explorer.  What shows in windows explorer is a CD drive reflecting the new HD.  I checked Device Manager and showed “WD SDS Device” as working properly.  I went to Disk Management and it prompted me to Initialize Disk.  It defaulted to MBR partition style and I click OK and it said “Media is Wrote Protected”.  It then shows Disk 1 in Disk Management as Unknown and Not Initialized.

Is there something I need to do to the new drive before attaching it to the My Book control board?  Do I need to load some software on the new Windows 7 machine?  I was all over the WD support area and am at a lost.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Exactly what drive model you have? The circuit board may not see the new drive, because is setup to work with one specific firmware.

I went and exchanged the drive I purchased for a Western Digital drive and it is now working.  I didn’t know it had to be a WD HD.  I did not want another Western Digital HD as it had failed just over two years.  I guess it makes sense from WD’s perspective to lock the type of drives that goes into their product.  It’s all about protecting your market share at the expense of the consumers.  What a surprise  .
