Reinstallation of WD Smartware

During clean-up of an old computer, my WD Passport Essential drive was accidentally erased.  Now I can access as the Smartware software is missing.  When I try to copy to the drive, it acts as though it is locked.  Is there a way to reinstall the software to unlock the drive and try and recover the data?

You can unlock the drive using the VCD/unlocker icon without installing smartware, but if you need the installer then go to WD’s site.

plh-wolfpack,

WD SmartWare is available as a free download in the Western Digital Support site support.wdc.com under the “Downloads” section. You will then have the option to select your WD Passport model to begin the download.

As an alternative, it is also available directly from the following links:

For Windows

For Mac
